DIY vacuum former -
The Fridge Frame concept was driven by a consideration of the unwanted material. My initial considerations revolved around using unwanted plastic. During this period I considered a variety of plastics including plastic bags. I finally chose to work with milk bottles due to the smooth surface, uniform colour and workability of the material.
The notion of creating a frame from unwanted plastic seemed an appealing means of taking advantage of the light weight nature of the material. The light-weight of the frame also allowed the item to b easily affixed to a fridge with the us of a magnet.
The construction of the frame was performed using vacuum forming. This was a challenging undertaking, but allowed the HDPE (milk bottle) to be transformed into varying shapes, that would not have been otherwise achievable.
The final frame has a frosted glass appearance, and offers a light-weight means of affixing photos to the refrigerator.
Really like the use of material and especially your processes to convert the waste material into a new product. The only complaint I would have is that you could have produced a more unique shape with the frame instead of a circle which is slightly impractical with square photos. Well done!

It might be interesting to see this magnet in a assorted colours.
It's great to see what you've done with such a common form of waste and to see how you've experimented with vacuum forming to creat the final product.
ReplyDeleteI'd suggest maybe working out a way of using the entire bottle and not just the flat sides. Also maybe you should look into the possibility for dangerous chemicals to be emmitted during heating.
Cool idea. It never occurred to me that you could reshape milk cartons. The fact that you did some attempts at home makes me think the whole vacuum forming process is not so intimidating. Maybe there could be art 'n' craft vacuum forming packs. I Think for this design a better colour could have been nice.
ReplyDeleteI really love how you have taken such a different approach to upcycling and actually using the material of a product to create a completely different shape. My only criticism would have to be like rob said, perhaps a more of a variety of shapes and sizes. other than that great job! love it!
